Camp Sertoma was created in 1999 in partnership with Confidence Learning
Center which is located on beautiful Sylvan Lake in central Minnesota. Camp
Confidence's mission has always been to provide outdoor education and
recreation for persons with all abilities. The focus of Sertoma is centered
around speech and hearing programs and thus Camp Sertoma was set up to provide
growth oriented outdoor learning and wilderness camping experiences within a
peer environment for youth who are deaf or hard of hearing.
The camp is the
product of and supported by Sertoma (Service to Mankind) Clubs located in
Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska.
A special Sertoma
club was formed to promote the camp and attract campers, raise funds for the
week long sessions, and to provide and maintain the camp facilities. Presently,
a week-long session at this 140 acre facility is provided by a staff chosen
for their skills in working with the deaf and hard of hearing community and who
work closely with a group of outdoor education specialists already employed by
the parent facility.
Camper fees are subsidized through support of Sertoma clubs from the Great
Plains Region. Campers are asked to pay a $50 fee, however, nobody will be
turned away for financial reasons.
